Sofa and Wardrobe Online: The Delivery Problem Nobody Warns You About

A sofa and a wardrobe fail at different stages of the same delivery, for completely different reasons – and neither reason is visible on the product listing page. The sofa fails at the door or the lift landing: it does not fit the entry path. The wardrobe arrives without incident, gets assembled in the bedroom, and then fails you six months later when you open it and realise it stores far less than you expected – not because it is small, but because the interior layout was never what the exterior dimensions implied. One problem is about physical clearance. The other is about what the spec sheet left out. This guide explains both, because solving one without understanding the other means you have a 50% chance of a frustrating furniture delivery even if you did half your homework.

Why does a sofa get stuck in Indian apartments more than any other piece of furniture?

The geometry works against you. A standard three-seater sofa has an arm-to-arm width of 84 to 92 inches. A standard Indian apartment main door has a clear opening of 32 to 36 inches. The sofa cannot pass through upright. That is known. What catches buyers is the second stage: the lift.

Many sofas arrive fully assembled – particularly in the mid-range and premium segment, where integrated armrests, attached cushion backs, and pre-fitted legs are part of the product. To move a fully assembled sofa through a 32-inch door, the delivery crew tilts it horizontally and carries it through on its side. That works at the door. What it requires next is a lift with interior depth of at least 54 to 60 inches, or a staircase landing wide enough to rotate the piece through a 90-degree turn without hitting a wall. Most residential lifts in India have interior depths of 48 to 54 inches. That is the gap where deliveries fail – not at the door, but at the turn.

None of this is calculated in the listing. The product page shows assembled dimensions. It does not show the minimum lift depth required, the door clearance needed, or whether the sofa can be safely tilted for entry without damaging the base or legs. These are questions the buyer has to ask. Almost none do, because the problem only becomes visible on delivery day.

Which three measurements does a sofa buyer need before placing the order?

Main door clear opening width – measured at the narrowest point including the frame, not wall-to-wall. This is the first constraint and determines whether horizontal entry is necessary at all.

Lift interior depth – the distance from the back wall to the open door. If this number is less than the sofa’s seat depth plus back height combined, the sofa cannot be carried in horizontally. Get this number from your building management or measure it yourself before ordering anything over a two-seater.

Sofa seat-back height – the height from the floor to the top of the backrest when assembled. This is the critical dimension for navigating both the lift and any staircase landing. It is almost never listed prominently. Ask the brand directly. A brand with a well-engineered product will know this number immediately.

Why is the wardrobe problem completely different from the sofa problem?

Because it has nothing to do with getting the piece inside your home. Wardrobes almost always ship flat-packed. The panels arrive, clear the lift with no trouble, and get assembled in the room. The problem appears weeks later.

A wardrobe listed as 180 cm wide and 210 cm tall tells you exactly two things: the exterior footprint. It does not tell you how much usable hanging rail you actually get, what the shelf depth is, whether the drawers are deep enough for folded jeans or only folded shirts, or whether a mirror panel is positioned inside the wardrobe – which takes up storage width and is not reflected in the exterior dimensions. Two wardrobes with identical external measurements can have interior layouts that are completely different in practice.

The mismatch only becomes apparent after you fill the wardrobe and discover the hanging section holds 40 shirts where you expected 60, or the bottom drawer is too shallow for anything folded more than once. By then, the assembly is complete and the return window has usually closed.

What should you check in a wardrobe listing before ordering online?

Dimension What to Look For Why It Matters
Hanging rail length Total usable hanging length in cm Determines actual shirt and trouser capacity, not just the count of sections
Shelf depth Depth in cm (standard is 45-55 cm) Shallower shelves cannot fit folded jeans, sweaters, or larger folded items
Drawer internal height Interior drawer height in cm Short drawers cannot hold folded clothing more than two layers deep
Mirror placement Whether mirror is on the door or a fixed interior panel An interior mirror panel reduces actual storage width, often by 10-15 cm
Assembly type Knockdown or pre-drilled Pre-drilled installs faster; knockdown allows more precise room placement

There is also a flat-pack height consideration worth checking: an 8-foot wardrobe panel shipped as a single piece may not clear a 7-foot lift interior when held upright. Ask whether tall wardrobes are shipped in split horizontal panels. Most brands do this as standard. A few do not, and the resulting delivery problem is as frustrating as the sofa scenario – except it was avoidable with one question.

How do you confirm delivery terms before placing either order?

For the sofa: collect door clear opening, lift interior depth, and sofa seat-back height before you click buy. If the brand cannot give you the seat-back height as a separate number from the total assembled height, treat that as a gap. Call customer support before the order, not after the truck arrives.

For the wardrobe: look for an interior layout diagram on the product page, not just the exterior dimensions. A brand that designed the interior for real storage will show both. A brand that shows only a render of the closed doors is not giving you the information you actually need.

Both purchases also depend on confirming floor delivery terms. Multi-storey residential delivery in India involves labour charges that vary significantly by floor and building type. Some platforms include this. Many do not. One line of confirmation saves a post-delivery argument. Both purchases are avoidable disappointments with the right dimensions in hand. For a complete sofa range with delivery clearance specs per product, and a Wardrobe Online range with interior layout diagrams per product, Wakefit covers both categories across multiple sizes, finishes, and configurations.
