5 Secrets to Maintaining Your Hair Density Between Salon Visits

We all know that post-appointment glow where your hair feels bouncy and full of life. However, keeping that density can be a bit of a challenge. Whether you are dealing with naturally fine hair or you have noticed a slight change in your hair volume over time, there are practical steps you can take at home to keep your strands looking their absolute best.

When your hair is dense, it looks vibrant and healthy from every angle. To help you keep that salon-quality volume, here are five secrets to maintaining your hair density between your professional appointments.

    1. Start with a Stimulating Cleanse

The foundation of any good hair routine starts in the shower. If you want to maintain density, you need a product that treats the scalp while adding substance to the hair fibre. This is where Kérastase Densifique Shampoo becomes a good addition to your home care kit.

This specific formula is designed to help hair that is losing its oomph by providing more texture and resilience. It uses ingredients like hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump the hair, making each strand feel thicker without weighing it down. When you use it, make sure to really massage your scalp. This simple action helps to increase blood flow to the follicles, which is essential for healthy hair growth.

    2. Prioritise Scalp Health

We often spend so much time focusing on the ends of our hair that we forget where the hair actually starts. A healthy scalp should be clear of debris, excess oil, and product buildup.

In Australia, our hair often deals with harsh sun and varying water quality, which can lead to a dry or irritated scalp. You might want to consider a gentle scalp exfoliant or a serum designed to balance the skin on your head.

When your scalp is in peak condition, your hair follicles can function at their best. This helps to prevent premature shedding and keeps your hair looking dense and full. A quick massage for a few minutes each night can also help to keep things moving and ensure your follicles stay active.

    3. Be Mindful of Mechanical Stress

It is easy to be a bit rough with our hair when we are in a hurry, but mechanical stress is a leading cause of thinning and breakage. This includes everything from how you brush your hair to the way you tie it up for the gym. If you are constantly pulling on your hair or using tight elastic bands, you could be causing tension that leads to hair loss around the hairline.

Switching to a silk or satin scrunchie is a small change that makes a huge difference. These materials glide over the hair rather than catching and pulling on it. Likewise, when you are brushing, always start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This prevents you from ripping through knots and snapping the hair.

Using a wide-tooth comb on wet hair is also a great habit to get into. Your hair is at its most fragile when it is wet, so being extra gentle during this time will help you keep more of your hair on your head and less in the brush.

    4. Feed Your Hair from the Inside Out

What you eat has a direct impact on the quality of your hair. Since hair is made of a protein called keratin, ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is vital. Many Australians find that adding more leafy greens, eggs, and healthy fats like avocado helps to improve the shine and strength of their hair over time.

Vitamins like biotin, zinc, and iron are also key players in maintaining hair density. If your body is low on these nutrients, it will often prioritise your vital organs over your hair, which can lead to thinning. It is always a good idea to consult a professional if you feel like your diet might be affecting your hair.  When you combine a nutrient-rich diet with high-quality topical products, you are giving your hair the best possible chance to thrive.

    5. Optimise Your Drying Technique

The way you dry your hair can either help or hinder your quest for density. High heat can strip the hair of its natural moisture, leading to brittle strands that break easily. When your hair breaks mid-shaft, you lose that beautiful density through the mid-lengths and ends, making your hair look thinner than it actually is.

Try to let your hair air dry about 70% of the way before you reach for the hair dryer. When you do blow dry, use a heat protectant and keep the nozzle moving so you don’t concentrate too much heat on one spot. For an extra boost of volume, dry your hair upside down. This lifts the roots away from the scalp and creates the illusion of much thicker hair instantly. It is an easy trick that provides a professional finish without needing a lot of extra tools. By keeping the heat low and being patient, you protect the integrity of your hair and keep it looking thick and healthy for weeks after your salon visit.

    Keep Your Hair Density Optimal

Maintaining your hair density does not have to be a complicated process. By choosing the right products, being gentle with your strands, and looking after your general wellbeing, you can enjoy full and voluminous hair every single day. It’s all about those small, consistent habits that add up to big results. Your hair is an investment, and with a little bit of extra care at home, you can keep it looking like you just stepped out of the studio.
