Most people assume the hard part of getting car finance is the credit check. In reality, a lot of applications stall because the paperwork is not ready. Lenders need to verify who you are, where you live, and that you can afford the repayments. If you cannot produce the right documents quickly, it slows everything down.

Check Where You Stand Before Gathering the Paperwork

There’s no point pulling together payslips, bank statements and proof of address if your application is unlikely to go through. So, before you dig out any paperwork, it’s worth running a PCP eligibility checker to get a sense of where you stand. These tools use a soft credit check, which means they will not leave a mark on your credit file. You will get an indication of whether you are likely to be approved and how much you could borrow, without committing to anything.

This step matters because it tells you whether it’s worth gathering everything together. If something flags up, you can address it before you go through a full application. It takes around 60 seconds and there is no obligation to proceed.

What to Gather Before You Apply

Once you have confirmed you are likely to be eligible, it’s time to get your documents in order. Here is what most lenders will ask for:

    • V5C logbook. If you are part-exchanging a car, lenders and dealers will want to see this. It’s worth knowing that the V5C records the registered keeper of the vehicle, not the legal owner. Proof of ownership is a purchase receipt or invoice. Keep both to hand.
    • Driving licence. Your photocard licence acts as both identity verification and proof that you are legally allowed to drive. Make sure it’s not expired and that the address on it matches your current address. Some lenders will also accept a valid passport as an alternative form of ID.
    • Proof of address. Lenders require three years of address history. A recent utility bill, bank statement or council tax letter dated within the last three months will usually do. If you have moved recently, you may need documents from your previous address too.
    • Proof of income. This is where employed and self-employed applicants diverge. If you are employed, three months of payslips is the standard. If you are self-employed, you will likely need SA302 forms alongside the corresponding Tax Year Overview for each year, plus two years of accounts.

    Why Address History Gets Overlooked

A lot of applicants focus on the V5C and driving licence, then get caught out by the address history requirement. Lenders use this to cross-reference your credit file and confirm you have been traceable. Gaps in address history can trigger manual reviews and delays.

If you have moved around a lot or lived in shared accommodation, it’s worth pulling your free statutory credit report before you apply. In the UK, credit data is held by three separate agencies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Lenders may use any one of them, and the information held can differ between agencies, so it’s good to check your report with all three. You will be able to see what addresses are listed and flag anything that looks wrong.

    What If You Are Self-Employed?

Self-employed applicants sometimes assume they will not qualify for car finance, but that is not the case. Lenders do assess applications differently, and the documentation requirements are a bit heavier. You will need to show consistent income over at least two years, usually through HMRC-issued SA302 forms and the corresponding Tax Year Overviews.

The Tax Year Overview is a separate document that confirms your figures match what HMRC holds on record, and most lenders require both. You can download them directly from your Government Gateway account under the Self Assessment section.

If your income varies month to month, lenders will typically average it out. What they are looking for is that you earn enough consistently, not that every month looks identical. Having your accounts prepared by a registered accountant can also strengthen your application.

    The Full Pre-Application Checklist

To keep things simple, here is a summary of what to have ready:

    • Valid photocard driving licence (address must match your current address)
    • V5C logbook and proof of purchase (if part-exchanging)
    • Proof of current address (utility bill, bank statement or council tax letter dated within the last three months)
    • Address history for the past three years
    • Three months of payslips (employed) or SA302 forms, Tax Year Overviews and accounts (self-employed)
    • Bank statements showing income and regular outgoings

Having these ready before you start your full application will make the process noticeably quicker. Some lenders can turn around approvals in minutes when documentation is clean.

Get Your Paperwork Right, Get Approved Faster

Car finance applications are often delayed by missing paperwork, not credit issues. Getting your documents, address history and proof of income in order before you apply puts you in a much stronger position.

Start with an eligibility check to confirm you are on the right track, then gather everything on the list above. The more prepared you are, the faster things tend to move.
