Tips for Managing Recovery Following Your Sclerotherapy in Sydney

Sclerotherapy remains the gold standard for treating spider veins and smaller varicose veins. In a coastal city like Sydney, where an active, outdoor lifestyle is the norm, many patients seek this treatment to improve both the comfort and the appearance of their legs. The procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body.

While the procedure itself is quick, the “magic” happens during the recovery phase. Proper aftercare is what ensures the treated veins stay closed and the skin remains clear. Here is how to manage your recovery following sclerotherapy in Sydney to achieve the best possible results.

    1. The Critical Role of Compression

The single most important factor in your recovery is the use of medical-grade compression stockings.

    • Why it Matters: Compression applies constant pressure to the treated vein walls, keeping them stuck together so they can seal permanently. It also reduces the risk of blood “trapping” in the treated area, which can cause brown staining or lumps.
    • The Sydney Schedule: Most specialists in Sydney, such as those at The Vein Institute or Sydney Vein Clinic, recommend wearing Class 2 (20-30 mmHg) compression stockings 24 hours a day for the first 3 to 7 days, followed by daytime wear for another week.
    • Fit is Everything: Ensure your stockings are professionally fitted. If they roll down or bunch up behind the knee, they can cause a “tourniquet” effect, which is counterproductive to healing.

    2. Movement and Walking

Unlike major surgery, sclerotherapy in Sydney requires you to be mobile immediately.

    • Walk Straight Away: You will likely be asked to walk for 15 to 20 minutes immediately after your session. This promotes healthy blood flow in the deep veins and prevents the formation of clots.
    • Daily Movement: Aim for a 30-minute walk every day during your recovery. Sydney’s numerous coastal walks or parklands provide the perfect environment for gentle, consistent movement.
    • Avoid Stasis: If you have a desk job, set a timer to stand up and walk around for five minutes every hour. Avoid crossing your legs, as this can restrict circulation in the treated areas.

    3. Activities to Avoid

While walking is encouraged, high-impact or “thermal” activities can interfere with the setting of the sclerosant.

    • No Heavy Lifting: Avoid heavy squats, deadlifts, or high-impact running for at least 7 to 10 days. Increased venous pressure can potentially “re-open” the veins that were just treated.
    • Stay Cool: Avoid hot baths, saunas, and spas. Heat causes veins to dilate (expand), which is exactly what you want to avoid during the initial healing phase. Stick to lukewarm showers and gently pat the skin dry.
    • No Sun Exposure: This is particularly important for Sydney patients. Keep your legs out of the sun for at least 4 weeks. UV exposure on a healing injection site can lead to hemosiderin staining—a brownish pigment that can take months to fade.

    4. Managing Normal Post-Treatment Sensations

It is common to experience some minor side effects as the veins begin to disappear.

    • Bruising and Redness: Small bruises at the injection sites are normal and typically fade within one to two weeks.
    • Lumpiness or “Stringy” Veins: Larger treated veins may feel firm or “cord-like” for a few weeks. This is a sign that the treatment has worked and the vein is turning into scar tissue.
    • Tenderness: A mild “aching” sensation is common. Over-the-counter Paracetamol is usually sufficient. Avoid Aspirin or Ibuprofen for the first 48 hours unless prescribed, as they can occasionally increase bruising.

    5. Skin Care and Follow-up

    • Hydrate the Skin: You can apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or an Aloe Vera gel to the legs once the injection sites have closed (usually after 24 hours) to soothe any dryness caused by the compression stockings.
    • Wait for the Results: Sclerotherapy is not an overnight fix. Spider veins typically take 3 to 6 weeks to disappear, while larger varicose veins treatment results may take 3 to 4 months to fully resolve.
    • The Review Appointment: Most Sydney specialists will schedule a follow-up at the 4-to-6-week mark. This is vital to check if any “trapped blood” needs to be expressed (a simple, painless process) and to determine if a second session is required for optimal density.

    Final Thoughts

Managing your recovery after sclerotherapy in Sydney is a straightforward process, but it requires discipline regarding compression and sun protection. By staying active and following the expert guidance of your vascular specialist, you ensure that your legs not only look better but feel lighter and healthier. Treat your recovery as a brief “reset” for your circulation—one that leads to long-lasting confidence and comfort.
