If you are planning to pursue an internationally recognized finance and accounting program, determining key ACCA subjects exemptions can save you significant time and effort. ACCA exemptions enable students with prior relevant qualifications to skip specific examinations, allowing them to begin at a level that matches their existing knowledge and skills rather than starting from scratch.

These exemptions are granted based on your academic qualifications, which include your degree, diploma, or professional certification in finance and accounting. However, not all papers are exemptible. While you may receive exemptions for up to 9 papers in the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels, the Strategic Professional level must be completed by all students. In this blog, we will break down who is eligible for exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and walk you through a step-by-step procedure to apply for them efficiently.

Understanding ACCA Subjects Exemptions: Eligibility, Application & More

    1. What Are ACCA Exemptions?

The exemption schemes provided by ACCA enable the student to be exempted from certain papers depending on their academic qualifications. If you have previously studied certain papers during your previous academic degree or professional certification, you can be exempted from certain papers by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. This helps you bypass certain papers and speeds up your path to becoming a qualified ACCA professional.

The exemption schemes are mainly given to Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills level students, but there is no exemption given to Strategic Professional level students, as it is considered to be an advanced level examination. Determining exemptions and how they work can help you plan your ACCA journey efficiently and save time and effort.

    2. Who Is Eligible for ACCA Exemptions?

Eligibility to apply for exemptions in ACCA subjects depends upon your educational qualifications. Students with finance, accounting, commerce, or business administration degrees are considered to be the best candidates to apply for exemptions. For example, candidates with a degree in B.Com, MBA in finance, or BBA may be eligible to apply for several exemptions depending upon the similarity between their courses.

Professional qualifications in subjects like CA, CPA, or CMA also make a candidate eligible to apply for exemptions. In some cases, candidates may even be eligible to apply for exemptions in all courses except the strategic level. However, the number of exemptions also depends upon the institution and the intention of the course.

    3. Which ACCA Papers Are Eligible for Exemptions?

ACCA exemptions are available for papers in Applied Knowledge skills for the subjects Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA). And in the Applied skills level for subjects such as Taxation (TX) and Financial Reporting (FR), the exemption depends on your prior studies.

However, exemptions are not granted for Strategic Professional exams such as Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR). This makes sure that all Association of Chartered Certified Accountants members meet a consistent international standard at the final level. However, even with maximum exemptions, students must complete the final stage of qualification.

    4. How Many Exemptions Can You Get?

The exemptions you are entitled to depend on your qualifications and academic results. ACCA provides a maximum of 9 exemptions out of 13 papers.  This includes all the papers in the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills level, and the only level remaining is the Strategic Professional level.

For example, a commerce graduate might receive 4 to 6 exemptions, whereas a qualified CA may receive up to 9 exemptions. However, not all degrees guarantee exemptions, and partial exemptions are common. It is important to assess your eligibility by utilizing the ACCA official exemption calculator.

    5. How to Apply for ACCA Exemptions?

The process of applying for ACCA subject exemptions is an easy process that starts with registration. When applying for ACCA subject exemptions, it is essential to note that upon the submission of your application, you will need to provide academic transcripts and certificates to support your application for the relevant qualifications.

After the review of your application for ACCA subject exemptions, you will receive a notification from ACCA on the number of exemptions that have been granted to you. Note that there may be a need for the payment of exemption fees for the exempted papers.

    6. Fees and Costs for Exemptions

Though exemptions save time, they are not absolutely free, as Association of Chartered Certified Accountants charge exemption fees per paper, which are equivalent to the exam entry fee for that paper, but the amount differs depending on the level of the paper being exempted.

Though it seems to be an extra cost, exemptions can be considered to be cost-effective in the long run. You save on tuition fees, study time and exam preparation efforts. Hence, it is vital to weigh cost against the advantages when deciding whether to claim exemptions.

    Conclusion

ACCA subject exemptions can fast-track your journey by identifying your prior academic qualifications and minimising the number of exams you need to take.. It assesses both your eligibility and the documents which can be exempted before you submit your application because this will help you avoid delays and secure your opportunity.

The Zell Education team provides personalized guidance to help you begin your ACCA journey if you require assistance with your exemptions.
