How to Know If You Have Anger Management Problems

If your temper often feels out of control, affects your relationships or frequently causes you to say or do things that you later regret, then you might have anger management problems. The good news is that there is help available and various resources you can turn to that can help you stop letting your anger impact your life and those around you.

Anger is a normal human emotion that almost everyone experiences at some point and in certain situations. People get angry all the time over someone cutting them off in traffic, a friend treating them poorly or an office manager using their title to undermine others.

In everyday situations, a little bit of anger is only to be expected. However, when your anger starts to negatively impact your quality of life and your relationships with the people around you, that’s when it starts to be a problem. If you ever feel like you don’t have control over yourself when you become angry, or that your anger causes you to act out of character, then you might benefit from attending some anger management classes in your area. The first step is to be aware of the signs and then to be aware of the resources available to you.

The Core Indicators of Emotional Dysregulation

The fact that you’re wondering how to know if you have anger management problems is a crucial step because it shows that you have self-awareness. Next, you should familiarize yourself with the primary signs that your emotional regulation might be lacking in some way.

Having an occasional outburst doesn’t automatically mean that you have a disorder. A true anger management problem is defined by patterns of frequency, intensity and duration.

    Frequency

Ponder for a moment on how often you feel enraged. If you’re experiencing intense bouts of anger daily or multiple times a week over minor inconveniences, then your emotional regulation might be skewed.

    Intensity

The intensity of your anger is also notable because it should ideally be proportional to the situation. If you’re having a level 10 meltdown over something as small as a temporarily misplaced set of keys, then this is certainly something that should raise concerns.

    Duration

How long do you hold onto your anger? Healthy anger flares up suddenly but dissipates just as quickly. If you sit stewing over conflicts for hours, days or even weeks, then this is a sign of unhealthy anger patterns. The inability to let go of resentment is one of the biggest indicators that someone may have anger management problems.

The Impact On Your Life and Relationships

The people around us are often quite adept at helping us gain awareness of our behavior. Maybe someone in your life has suggested more than once that you should attend some anger management classes, but you’ve brushed it off.

Or maybe you yourself have wondered how to know if you have anger management problems in the aftermath of an unfortunate situation. These are often signs that we tend to either forget or overlook. One of the most definitive ways to ascertain the severity of your anger is to assess the collateral damage in your life.

Some red flags that your anger temper is actively impacting your personal and professional relationships are:

    • Having strained relationships with the people around you.
    • Family members, close friends and romantic partners walking on eggshells to avoid triggering your anger.
    • Losing your temper at work and being reprimanded, given a warning or terminated.
    • Legal issues pertaining to outbursts that led to altercations with strangers, property damage or interactions with law enforcement.

Once your anger has crossed over into these areas, then your anger has entered a dangerous territory, and intervention is probably your best option to avoid causing further damage going forward.

Taking Action By Finding Help and Treatment

There are many avenues you can explore to help you address your anger management problems in a way that will empower you to prevent them from causing you any further distress.

Many people find that attending inpatient treatment at one of the reputable rehabs in Fort Lauderdale is an ideal choice for immediate and comprehensive intervention. Going into rehab gives you time away from the main triggers of your anger and provides you with a safe space where you can be honest and open about your problems with professionals who understand what you’re experiencing and can give you tools you can use to start managing it.

Should in-patient treatment not be a realistic or viable option for you, you can also consider things like:

    • Support groups
    • Individual therapy
    • Mindfulness-based practices
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The success of your treatment depends on your willingness to learn and be open to the suggestions given to you. No one way works; you just need to find the one way that works for you.

    Managing Your Anger is Possible

Facing up to your anger and admitting that you have a problem is just the first step; getting the intervention you need to prevent it from causing further damage to your life and relationships is the hard part. But, thankfully, there are many resources available and people ready to help you; you just need to reach out and ask for help.
